Peters
Russell has performed in
the UK since 1995, and is now a popular face at such top clubs as The Comedy
Store and Jongleurs. He has appeared on Channel 4's Nights At The Empire, ITV'S
Live From Jongleurs, BBC1s The Stand Up Show and Channel 5's Club Class, which
he filmed on his previous visit here in February last year. Since his return
to Canada, Russell has been filming a new sitcom for Canadian television. He
has also appeared in Police Academy - The Series, and has had two one hour specials
on The Canadian Comedy Channel, Russell Peters is Off The Hook and The Russell
Peters Show (which won a Gemini Award for Best Solo Comedy Show). Russell is known for his
'cheeky brand of comedy, which is rude without being offensive; A definite 'lad'
without alienating the female section of the audience. Russell draws on his
Asian roots, and explores attitudes towards race in a way that is fresh, often
surprising and is unafraid of hitting hard. While controversial at times, he
avoids being senselessly derogatory, and combines his observations with a likeable
stage persona and cheeky grin. During 2001 Russell made
his first appearance in the South African Comedy Festival, and presented a series
of Network East:Late for BBC2. He also hosted the finals of Miss Nude UK for
Granada, a role which he will be repeating throughout all the European versions
of the same show in 2002. 2002 has also seen Russell present another series
of Network East:Late, and he will be presenting Mechanoids for BBC Choice later
in the year. He will also be returning to South Africa, to host an "ethnic
show" in Durban, as well as appearing in comedy festivals in Brussels,
Amsterdam. and for the 11th year running he will be performing at the Just for
Laughs festival in Montreal.
